Major Project 2007-2008
Location – India
Project Value $4.5million
Tata Motors had been making the TL Pick-up truck for many years and wanted to make some radical visual changes to enhance the vehicle and to assist its launch into some new markets. I led the development of the concept phase of this project in the UK, before hand over of the chosen design to the production engineering team in Pune, India.
Tata Motors has its own internal resources to deliver design and engineering projects, but this project was outsourced to us to accelerate its development.
The brief was to carry over the chassis and all major components and to deliver a design where all of the visual internal and external surfaces would be new. We also had to develop a new Spacecab version which did not exist in the old model range.
The project started with 140 different sketched themes which were reduced to 3 main themes and these were reviewed digitally, before deciding on the main theme to model full size in clay. During this process, all features were modelled over the existing carry over data so that a feasible solution was guaranteed. The whole concept phase was delivered in 6 months.
